Q&A With Caffe Divano Owners, Patrick and Lisa Beecroft

Patrick, Lisa, and their new baby Juliana

If you’ve wandered past the commercial building on the west end of Klahanie, you’ve probably noticed the warm glow of Caffe Divano. The coffee shop is the newest addition to the community.

To welcome them to the neighbourhood, we asked the owners Patrick and Lisa to tell us about themselves and their cafe.

So tell us a bit about your background (how long you’ve lived in Port Moody, etc).

Patrick moved to the tri-cities from downtown nine years ago when he started Cornerstone Cafe in Coquitlam. I grew up in Coquitlam (but went to school in Port Moody) and have been working with Patrick for the past four years. We’ve been married for two years and have a six month old daughter named Juliana.

What attracted you to opening a coffee shop in Klahanie?

We inquired about whether there was going to be any commercial space in Klahanie a few years back when the first phase of the development was just going up and then about a year ago we found out that there may be an opportunity for us to lease a space in this building.

Our plan had always been to open a second store in Port Moody and when we saw this space we realized that it would be the perfect chance to create a cafe with enough space for a kitchen in the back for us to do all our baking and given that it was a brand new building we could design the space to our own specifications (which is a certainly a rarity).

What’s makes Caffe Divano unique to other coffee shops?

Well, hopefully customers will find that several things make us unique.

Firstly our coffee is all relationship coffee that is locally roasted by 49th Parallel Roasters. 49th is owned by the Piccolo brothers who founded Caffe Artigiano and endeavour to source the finest beans and roast them to perfection.

Secondly, all of our baked goods are homemade from scratch. Everything is made in house so we can control the quality and that is certainly something that you won’t find in most coffee shops.

Finally, we are locally owned and operated, we always endeavour to be as “green” as possible and we aim to be a community minded business that gives back to the communities where we do business.

What do you hope to offer the community?

We hope to offer the people of this community a local cafe that will offer superior coffee, consistent quality products, friendly service and a relaxing ambiance where they can sit and relax, visit with friends or just stop in for a coffee (and homemade dog treat) when they’re out for a walk with their dog.

What’s your favourite coffee-related drink?

Single Origin French Press (Patrick) – it’s one of the purist ways to extract coffee and the beauty of the 49th’s coffee is it’s just amazing without adding anything to it.

Egg Nog Latte (Lisa) – it’s an obviously seasonal answer but we just got the egg nog in this week and it will certainly be my drink of choice for the next month.

Anything else you want the Klahanie community to know?

We offer free wireless internet, we are continually expanding our menu and encourage feedback from customers to find out what types of items they are looking for and starting soon we will have live music on certain evenings.

Also, we serve waffles on the weekends which just make weekends that much better…

Be sure to visit Caffe Divano and say hi to Lisa and Patrick!
