Rick Hansen’s extraordinary Man in Motion tour kicked off 25 years ago.  Two and a half decades later, the Rick Hansen Relay, which began in August 2011, will be passing through Port Moody.  Three individuals from Port Moody who have been recognized as making a positive difference in the lives of others, will be acknowledged in a brief ceremony in front of Port Moody City Hall, and one of these individuals will be doing a portion of this 7,000 participant, cross-country relay.  If you would like to support this relay, or meet these great individuals, check out the City of Port Moody’s relay details.

The time to register for Klahanie’s second annual community garage sale has arrived!  Last year we had over 40 residents attend, and we hope to make this year bigger and better.  We have more tables, signs for townhomes, and will be doing a massive charity drive, benefitting the Share food bank, the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Port Moody Ecological Society, and the Charlene Reavely Children’s Charity.

We hope to have you on board.  Please be sure to let your neighbours know to register also (share the link at the end of this blog with them)!  And if you are interested not just in registering, but in doing some volunteer work on the day of the sale, please let me know by posting a comment.  We’ll need a few extra hands.

We are fortunate to live in a community where the awesomeness of moms is seen on a daily basis – we are everywhere!  We are also fortunate to live in a city that naturally provides some very cool ideas on what moms can do on their special day, within very close proximity.  Here are some ideas:

• An active day with a Rocky Point Mother’s Day Paddle?
• A gorgeous hike with family around Buntzen Lake?
• A walk through Inlet Park to Rocky Point, followed by brunch?

Most of all, though, let’s hope for a sunny, Happy Mother’s Day!

As everyone knows by now, the Evergreen line has been approved, and Port Moody will be home to two rapid transit stations.  Klahanie is situated exactly between these two stations, so our input is important.  What do you envision as progressive development in Port Moody, particularly in light of the new transit system?  A widening of the Moody St. overpass for increased pedestrian traffic?  More mixed use zoning? The Port Moody Fingerling Festival is now in it’s 21st year and from personal and professional experience, is a fabulous event to attend with your family and friends.  Help the Noon’s Creek hatchery release 40,000 young chum salmon from the hatchery into the creek for their epic four year journey in the Pacific Ocean. The event takes place at Port Moody’s rec centre’s ice rink, a nice stroll from home. Here are some additional details:

• Buckets are provided free of charge.
• Bob’s and Lolo, children entertainers will be there
• Multiple activities for children, such as nature puzzles and arts and crafts will be available
• Over 50 environmental organizations will be represented
• Donations gratefully accepted by Noon’s Creek Hatchery

Hikers, ramblers, and wanderers are all welcome to join the Crossroads Hospice Society’s 10th Annual Hike for Hospice on Sunday May 6, 2012. This national pledge-based family event raises funds to support people living with a terminal illness as well as their loved ones.
